28th April 1942 – 1st November 2009

‘GONE AWAY’ sounded from the hunting horn at Loudoun Parish Church Newmilns, Ayrshire on November 6. This was a fitting note to end a service to honour and celebrate the life of Betty Hannah who died on November 1, at the age of 67.

Born in 1942 at Milton Farm, Galston, Ayrshire, the daughter of farmer and cattle dealer Jackie Morton, Betty’s love of the countryside and horses was there from the start. Her own riding career spanned from being a pony mad child to point-to-point riding at Bogside, eventing at Annick Lodge and Barskimming; representing Ayr Riding Club in the showjumping championships at Stoneleigh, team chasing across Scotland and, of course, her great love of hunting with the Eglinton Foxhounds.

Some of her highlights included winning the Ayrshire Yeomanry Hunt Race for the first time in 1972 on the irish hunter Peter Pan and racing for last time to be first lady and overall third in 2006 in the renamed Eglinton Hunt Race on her home-bred Thoroughbred, Oliver. Betty was a tireless supporter and fundraiser for Eglinton Hunt, always encouraging the young to come hunting and running many successful events including the annual Tally-ho dance.

Her wide circle of friends including farmers, car club enthusiasts and the hunting community will remember her as a fun loving girl, always ready for a party and being the host of numerous themed barn dances to celebrate her birthdays. The sad loss of Betty will leave a gap in the lives of many family and friends, but none more so than her daughters Susan and Shona and son Morton.
