RIDDEN CHAMPION at NPS Scotland's Spring Show, at Ingliston EC, was debutante, Christine and Charlie Anderson's Haylers Jazz.
Louise Maxwell rode him in his open mountain and moorland ridden class, and Hilda Dobie in the championship. Jazz, a black Welsh cob gelding by Avonvalley Tiger Harry, will be eight this year. He has been to the Horse of the Year Show three times and was reserve at the Highland last year.
Louise also qualified the Anderson family's home-bred Dartmoor pony, Rushfield Bailey for Malvern and Blair.
Another winner in this section was Fiona Longley's Welsh mountain gelding, Highland Jury, by Twyford Nirvana. Well ridden by Rosie Longley, from Fintry, he also won his intermediate class.
Five out of nine eligible contenders stayed on for the supreme and reserve went to Gillian McMurray's home-bred nine-year-old Highland pony mare Trailtrow Teal (Carrick Raasay/Trailtrow Tilliewhille).
Ponies from Trailtrow won the first two places in the native intermediate class, with Kirsten McMurray on Trailtrow Teal standing ahead of her mother on the mouse dun gelding, Trailtrow Tarskavaig, a previous Cumberland County champion. Teal was champion novice, gaining an NPS/Picton qualifier, as she did at Strathallan last year, and at Ingliston she was also reserve intermediate pony.
Sara Lean's five-year-old Dartmoor gelding, Blairhill Truffle, also won a novice class.
Liz and Pat Rennie's New Forest pony, Lomondside Toffee, captured the reserve open ridden award after heading the New Forest/Connemara class from Alison Granger's Connemara gelding Eastlands Loch Tam, a previous Doune and Dunblane champion. Home-bred, Toffee, a gelding son of Lomondside Emperor and Silverlea Golden Shred, last year was champion at Neilston, second at the Highland, and champion at Ingliston's Grand Slam.
It was a first time in the ring for Evelyn Aitken and Gillian Beattie's reserve novice ridden pony, the four-year-old section C gelding, Nebo Robert The Bruce (Nebo Bouncer/Nebo Rachel). He had been bought from Stuart Watt as a two-year-old. His sire is a previous Royal Welsh champion and his dam was supreme at a Welsh International Show, in Germany, and has been twice Cuddy-qualified.
Nicola Luti's Welsh section D gelding, Costa Ricardo, won the native intermediates. This seven-year-old son of Pentrefelin Taliesin was bred in Kent and bought at in 2006. He was adult in-hand champion at the Scottish Welsh Pony and Cob Association Show last year.
"He is a lovely stamp of a pony which tracks up beautifully and is well balanced," said Liz Claxton, who placed Jill Cousins' Kenilwood Sirocco champion of both the riding/hunter ponies, light horses in-hand and the coloured/part-bred and Eriskay sections.
The three-year-old bay gelding, Sirocco, bred in Ireland, is by Mynach Arion and out of Rustums Whispering Wind, a mare bred by Jill. He was supreme in-hand at NPS Scotland, Strathallan, last year, and champion at Blair.
Rose Kelbie's two-year-old Royal Northern champion Lyndrose Tiny Dancer, by Heavenly Boy Blue, was reserve of the first section and Ryelle Morton's Jack IV, in the second. A traditional coloured horse, Jack IV, winner of the ridden class, won his ticket to Hickstead at the recent BSPS Show, Rowallan.
The winning Eriskay was Fiona Misselbrook's Crichton Benbecula, shown by Fiona Martin.
Klingrahoull Valkyrie, a six-year-old piebald Shetland gelding, bred at Walls, in Shetland, was mini M and M champion for Kim Stewart, ridden by her three-year-old son, Rubin Stewart Lamont. Gemma Mason's first ridden Welsh mountain mare, five-year-old Llanarw Betsan, was reserve.
Overall M and M in-hand honours went to Marie-Claire Nimmo's Duntarvie Antony, a three-year-old home-bred Welsh section B colt by Lemonshill Limelight and out of Duntarvie Leading Lady which went to Olympia in 1999 ridden by Jemma Kirk.
Antony, produced by Richard Telford, had been champion at NPS Scotland, Strathallan and reserve M and M at the Scottish Horse Show.
Bill Ireland's three-year-old Dales colt Kilmannan Warrior (Village Defender/ Dartdale Maizie) was youngstock reserve.
Senior champion and reserve overall was Anthea Hodgson's Shetland pony mare, Lathom Juni (Dewlands Vintage/Lathom Jubilee). Juni had been the NPS Kilmannan Stud silver medal champion at Blair where Christine and Charlie Anderson's Rushfield Bailey - reserve adult at Ingliston - had been a class winner. Domenique Efthymiou brought her new pony, the Connemara gelding, Carlingford Cherub, an 11-year-old son of Millfields Trident, to win the native large breeds class.
Cold, wet and windy conditions in the outside worker ring did not deter hardy competitors producing good results. The novice champion was Julie Somervail's dun Connemara stallion Bellindene Franklyn (Garryhinch Prince/ Cocum Viva Donna) which has been with his rider Jennifer Christie, Nenthorn, for a year now.
Evelyn Aitken and Gillian Beattie's six-year-old Welsh section B gelding Rosedust March Mist, ridden by by Emma Byrne, was champion M and M intermediate worker, with Becky Robinson's section A gelding, Airyhope Gunner, by Blaenau Vulcan, reserve.
The open champion was Jane McNaught's Highland gelding Whitefield King Ivan, a nine-year-old son of Emperor of Whitefield and Whitefield Queen Zsa'Zsa. He was ridden by Rose Macpherson. King Ivan was second at Blair Castle in his open worker class and at the breed show was reserve worker champion.
