The Scottish National Equestrian Centre, Broxburn, ran one of its busiest shows to date with classes on the Saturday of around 30 to 40 horses with the competition running through to 9pm.
Girvan’s Susan McKie scored a double on the busy day with her pair Cruisin Susan and Cantaro starting her day off with a decisive win in the 1.05m with the former.
Bought as an unbroken three-year-old from the same breeder as Cree Cruiser, Hugh Paterson, this Scottish Sports Horse mare has been very consistent throughout her career especially in the smaller speed classes.
Finding a very small gap through to the third fence was the deciding factor that put this Grade A mare seconds in front of Alistair White on Gymnastique.
Win number two came courtesy of another mare, Cantaro. Having been off for a few years due to an injury, Cantaro had been sent to the stallion this summer, but having left it too late the decision was made to bring her back into work.
Nineteen had made it through to Robert Canney’s now 1.30m jump off opened by Martin Arnott on the first of three rides, Ben Vorlich.
His steady clear was enough to earn 5th place as the times speeded up.
Laura Hutt had a go with John Harley’s Special Reserve. Ridden by John at home and only meeting up with Laura at shows this big son of Tornado made the fences look easy to slot into eventual 4th place.
Martin then steered Vanity Gold into third before Mark Turnbull entered with Ulurru.
Having had a busy day riding some real novices earlier in the day Mark had a good chance with this homebred mare and set off in a good rhythm turning short to what had been the last fence in the first round to stop the clock on 34.46 seconds.
Being drawn 13th was to prove lucky for Susan and Cantaro as they took the same route as Mark most of the way only cutting the same turn a bit tighter to record the winning time of 34.17.
Three more double clears were recorded from Lucy Guild, Caretino De Reve; Cara Mia, Stephen Lohoar and Serial K with Trevor Nicholson.
The following day the only person to record a brace of wins was Katie Gordon on her mother Kim’s Wellheads Foxglove.
A 10 year old by Matinee Du Maddon Wellheads Foxglove has been more often seen eventing finishing 3rd at Turnberry earlier this year.
Brushing up on their show jumping over the winter months they easily headed the British Novice from Jill Ogg on Pennbretti Mystic Moon then went on to do the same in the following Discovery this time leaving Greg Taylor on the impressive Royalty Van De Heernis in second.
Craig Hamilton scored for the Ron Brady camp when his double clear on board UFO VI was good enough to win Sunday’s 1.20m/Foxhunter from Moira Young on her own True Braveheart.
Melissa Baillie took time out from her university studies to partner Landja Conda to a victory in a Newcomers. Described by her father as very scopey but green this little chestnut, a former ride of Allan Birch has taken a lot of work but it’s all starting to pay off for Melissa who produced a super double clear from him in the Newcomers and jumped a good round in the 1.20m Open.
However, this will be the last show for Melissa for a few weeks when after jumping so well she suffered a broken arm whilst loading the horses ready to go home and will now spend the next six weeks in plaster!
Delighted to collect her first red rosette with a new partner was Natalie Devlin on Arabella X.
Bought from Jack McGeoch just a few weeks ago, Arabella has already picked up some placings at previous shows but her smooth jump off round here in the Discovery saw them head off the challenge from the in form pair of Alexandra Meikle on her ex racehorse Pinkers Cleuch.

After a couple of recent visits to Musselburgh racecourse, I am of the view that it is a worthy contender for a racecourse of the year award.
