For the second year that Keith Country Show has spanned its new two-day format, with the majority of light horses classes now held on the Sunday of the show, Huntly breeder Fiona Thomson won her second successive supreme in show sash.

Her supreme champion, shown by her husband Jarrad Patterson, was the home-bred two-year-old three-quarter Thoroughbred, Southills Spook.

“I can really see the horse going on to do a job,” said overall judge, Liz Claxton, from Clunie, Blairgowrie. “He has lovely limbs, is a good mover and is a lovely stamp of a hunter,” she added.

Spook, who is a half brother to the 2009 Keith Show supreme, was sired by Primitive Proposal and was bred out of the successful show mare, Aline. He was champion at Echt, and stood first in his class at the Royal Highland, Cheshire County and the Derby Festival.

And the reserve supreme title went to four-year-old Crista Lockhead Anderson’s lead-rein pony, and mini riding pony champion, Daultons Master Rupert.

The nine-year-old gelding, led by Jane Miller, which has unknown breeding, was adding to the family’s supreme success after Crista’s sister Nicole won the supreme at Turriff. Master Rupert was reserve champion at Banchory, and champion at Howe, Braco and at Ingliston, Bishopton.

But the new format at Keith has not yet bedded in, and caused a few issues. During the supreme, which began without all the section championships having been completed, a competitor was kicked and no first-aid staff were called, and throughout the day, there was considerable unease amongst competitors who were competing in rings in the lower portion of the showground, in the ‘nursery’ field, which was at best considered poor, deep and uneven.

The Arabs and part-breds, Irish Draughts and coloured horses also had to be warned not to use the bottom portion of their ring, as it was strewn with broken glass.

After the judging of the supreme had begun, the working hunter and veteran and ex-racehorse championships were concluded.

Working hunter champion, and mountain and moorland WHP champion, was the Craigie Equestrian produced, 11-year-old Connemara, Rebel Rouser, owned by Judy Fairburn. Fifth in his ridden class at the Horse of the Year Show, where he also competed as a worker, he has mainly stood at stud this year. He was also third at the Royal Highland.

Reserve was Naomi Watson’s 11-year-old Welsh D, Ristol Cuchulainn. Second at the Highland this year, he was second at the Cheshire County Show and was champion at NERC.

Veteran and ex-racer champion was Jane Jeffries’s 16-year-old Irish Draught cross TB, Lord Marek. Champion at Banchory last year he also stood champion at New Deer and was supreme at Angus.

Reserve was Fiona Ross’s 15-year-old former HOYS and RIHS small hunter, Breakdance, which was coming out for its first show of 2010 as cob. Sired by Cavalier and out of Keils, he has also previously won and stood champion at the Royal Highland, Great Yorkshire, Keith, Turriff, the Black Isle and Perth shows.

Alexandra Bryce took the coloured championship with her five-year-old part-bred Arab gelding, Kavnaghs Stars and Stripes. Champion at Echt, he had stood second in-hand at the Royal Highland.

Reserve was Conundrum, which last year won the ridden supreme and reserve supreme overall championship at the Scottish Regional CHAPS show, in Ayr, for rider Philippa Stephen. This was his second show of the year, having stood second at Turriff, as he competes as an event horse, having been placed fifth at Strathallan the previous weekend. He was also fourth at Hopetoun Horse Trials. Last year he was champion at Drymen.

Arab and part-bred champion for Lisa and Carolyn Coghill was the 11-year-old mare, Stemster Millenium Bug, sired by Germont and out of Hammond’s Fleur de Lys. Multi-champion and supreme at the Black Isle show, she has also won championship this year at Kingsbarns and was reserve at the Puddledub Show and Turriff.

Reserve, and returning from a broken leg, was last years first placed ridden Arab from the Royal Highland, Wind Wizard, for Emma Duncan and Margaret Stuart. This 13-year-old gelding is a former British Amateur champion and has this year stood reserve at Bonnyton, and Arab ridden at NERC.

Fiona Menzies stood top of the Irish Draught section, with her 17-year-old pure-bred Craigallen Queen. Sired by Banks Fee Daniel and out of Lucky Queen, she currently has a 14-week-old foal at foot.

Stemster Millenium Bug also stood champion in the ridden horse section, with Claire Newlands riding side saddle on her 17-year-old Arabian Faroh, in reserve.

Faroh was first at Echt, second at Turriff, and won the classic side saddle at the Royal Highland in 2008, and was second at the Highland this year and last.
