At the BSPS Scottish branch championship show, the Scottish show hunter pony champion was Alex Brewster’s Diptford Sea Eagle, ridden by Sophie Brewster.
At the Royal Highland last year Sea Eagle, the show hunter pony champion, went on to collect the Queen’s Cup as the best animal in the light horse section.
Four-year-old Emma Outram rode the reserve, her leading rein pony Bronheulog Charmer, winner of the mixed combination class.
Another leading rein pony, the bay mare Rivenwood Class Act, ridden by Olivia Cousens, captured the Scottish show pony championship.
Madeleine Tinson’s Lord of the Manor III secured the Scottish working hunter pony championship, receiving the Juliette Mactaggart Memorial Cup from David Mactaggart.
The Knipe Family’s Exotic Dancer was ridden by Jade Laycock to secure the intermediate championship. He had been bought from his breeder as a four-year-old and has been fourth at HOYS as a small hunter.
Mini show hunter pony champion, in a section where the ponies were asked to go between low hayracks and over poles on the ground, was Nantlais Gwerthfawr ridden, on the lead rein, by Charlie Marshall. The show hunter pony champion was Vicky Rudd’s Burfordly Sea Lord.
The HOYS hunter champion was the heavyweight winner Osborne, shown by Roz Bosworth from Lincoln, The middleweight winner, George Harper’s O’Brogain, which is ridden by students at the Northern College, Caithness, was ridden by James Munro into reserve place. At Kingsbarn, O’Brogain had qualified for the RIHS. Joanna Wilson’s Ben Mhor bred 16 years ago at the Rockhill Stud, won the Scottish hunter class. This horse was champion at the Horse of the Year Show in 2003.
Ruth Darling’s home-bred Chesterhill Forrester (Moss-side Campsie Glen/Sanoe of Caimbe) won the Heritage mountain and moorland championship. This eight-year-old Highland gelding was the winner of the winter restricted dressage final at Rowallan.
The Knipe Family’s Dartmoor leading rein mare, four-year-old Doolittle Tattibogle, ridden by Olivia Taylor, was mini champion.
Champion show pony was Mary Nicoll-Thompson’s Jack of Diamonds, ridden by Zoe-Martella Nicoll.
The mini show pony champion was Rivenwood Class Act, and reserve was Auchmaliddie Party Time, winner of the first ridden class, shown by Nicole Lockhead Anderson, from Banchory.
Yasmin Thomson’s five-year-old show hunter type mare Blairfield Silicon was novice intermediate champion and reserve was Jill Slight’s six-year-old Stanley Grange City Lights. The novice show pony/show hunter pony was Elizabeth Hamilton’s Dowshill Midnight Madness.
The Aitken/Beattie Team’s four-year-old Moelview Mohawk son Tafwys Flying Hawk, ridden by Emma Byrne, was the CHAPS champion. He had been supreme at the Scottish CHAPS Regional Championships and runner-up in the final. Russell Skelton, Caithness, showed the reserve, Yasmin and Sandy Norrie’s yearling colt Blackhall Charlie of unknown breeding.
Champion HOYS worker pony, after winning the intermediate class, was Sweet Violet, ridden by Jade Thompson. She had been reserve at Northumberland County.
The Scottish working hunter champion was Claire Pearson’s Vicolando. This Dutch warmblood gelding, which has qualified for the RIHS and Blair Castle, was reserve at Ayr.
Heritage mountain and moorland worker honours were won by Skellorn Royal Consort, ridden by Rosie Longley, a member of Perth Pony Club.
Daukester Simon of Warleigh, partnered by Millie Manners, secured the mini Heritage title. Mini BSPS worker honours went to Lord of the Manor III. The novice worker champion was Katie Ritchie’s Little Jack Flash (Whalton Caruso/Texas Tinkerbelle), bred by Pat Stirling.

After a couple of recent visits to Musselburgh racecourse, I am of the view that it is a worthy contender for a racecourse of the year award.
