The Golden Anniversary Scottish Horse Show was a very special event indeed.
Every one of the nine rings had bouquets of golden flowers attached to its perimeter at intervals, there were flower posies on all the picnic tables and music added to the festive atmosphere.
Scarlet-coated Charlie Hewat was coach horn blower in the ring, and there was a parade of Lauderdale foxhounds. The catalogue was also special, containing photographs of previous champions and a list of previous venues.
The Cuddy supreme in-hand qualifier champion was Jennifer Gilchrist’s brood mare Rotherwood Flamenco, which had headed the riding pony breeding entrants as well as being reserve amongst the mountain and moorland partbreds.
This 11-year-old daughter of Rotherwood Peter Rabbit and Rotherwood Pirouette won the Cuddy qualifier at the Great Yorkshire last year, and in the final she was second (to Pinewell Bucks Fizz) in the ‘ponies’ class, shown by Jerome Harforth.
Her present foal at foot is by Jennifer’s own Stanley Grange Regal Heights, which was champion at the NPS Summer Show, Malvern.
Reserve for the Cuddy was Julmar Sweet Rose, from John and Julie Devenney’s stud near Clitheroe, and was shown by their daughter Abbie. The scopey five-year-old Welsh mountain mare is by Foxgate Edward and out of Penwisg English Rose by Twyford Panache.
She had been reserve supreme at the North Eastern Show, Barnard Castle and reserve at NCPA Maelor. At Springwood Park she headed the Welsh section A entries and won the NPS/Kilmannan Stud silver medal rosette for the overall mountain and moorland champion.
Bill Ireland’s Dales stallion, Kilmannan Rob Roy (Village Defender/Kilmannan Black Pearl), was reserve for this.
The mountain and moorland in-hand champion was Sandra Burton’s Connemara stallion Coolilaun Cushlawn, from Wigan.
The McWilliam 122cm supreme mini champion was the BSPS first ridden pony Westway Twilight Rose (Beckside Topnotch/Greenlinks Loympic Rose), a six-year-old chestnut mare shown by Phoene Borrowdale and produced by Team Emmerson. The HOYS lead rein of show hunter type, Pumphill Fingal, was reserve. This son of the Dartmoor stallion Senruf Jetsam had been a winner at Northumberland County.
“I was last supreme here 10 years ago. I am coming back in 10 years time to try again,” joked Edward Young, after he had been awarded the supreme ridden accolade by Joanna MacInnes.
The winner was Galliana, the champion riding horse, which had also been reserve intermediate, ridden then by Miranda Wallace. The seven-year-old gelding, owned by her, had been second at the Great Yorkshire and at Garstang.
Kirstine Douglas had two horses in the supreme judging, for she had been awarded the hunter championship with Harry Rodgers’ District Court and also headed the cobs with Gill and Geoff Gale’s Barneebus. It was the latter, a winner at the BSHA championship show last year, which was selected as reserve supreme.
Vanessa Ramm’s ‘small’ Templebready Fear Not was reserve hunter, having been second at Newark, and Yvonne Pearson’s Kilpatrick Lord, produced by Richard Iggulden, won the HOYS worker class.
This Kingsmaster gelding had been working hunter champion at Royal Balmoral. Malcolm Cartier’s three-year-old Primitive Proposal gelding Georgetown III was in-hand hunter champion, having been second at the Great Yorkshire. The Bordergrove Stud’s two-year-old gelding Bordergrove Mexico was reserve.
The yearling filly, Freckleton Mayfair, bred by Penny Roots, headed the potential performance horses for James Munro, whilst William and Joanne Moran’s nine-year-old Primitive Rising mare Smart Thinking was reserve. The performance pony champion, as well as hunter pony breeding leader, was the two-year-old gelding Anton Little Astaire. He was shown by Brian Lewis and belongs to Anthony Thomas-Chambers and Clive Johnston.
Hack champion was the six-year-old grey gelding Small-land Silvertown, owned by Peter Brookshaw, produced by Edward Young and ridden by Jordan Cook. Silvertown had been sixth at the RIHS, second at Garstang and Area 4B and has qualified for HOYS as both an intermediate and as a hack.
The Marriot/Cryer partnership won the light horses in-hand title with their yearling filly Aquarius Last Masterpiece, produced by Mark Carswell.
The overall Arab champion was Danna Gowan’s Astrologer, which was reserve overall last year. This 12-year-old chestnut gelding, with eye catching movement, was bred by Gillian Lancaster, and is by Ibn Aboud and our of Aureme. He was hand-reared as a foal after his dam rejected him. This year he was British National Crabbet champion at Malvern.
Reserve overall was a three-year-old colt Downies Mystic Masterpiece, shown by Geoff Houghton, from Kirby Lonsdale. Masterpiece was junior male British National champion.
Georgia Hulme’s Chinook Lancia won the show hunter pony championship. They had been reserve at Shropshire and West Midlands. Julie Bankier, riding Hindleap Choir Boy, which had been supreme at the Royal Highland and Perth, won the 133cm class and was reserve.
Champion intermediate was Jade Thomson’s grey Trefeinon Glen, by Old Leighton, which has just won his first worker class, at BSPS Area 16. The show pony champion was Lynn Guy’s Ardenhall Missoni daughter Parkhill First Edition.
The HOYS working hunter pony champion was Catherine Lindsay-Brown’s Collino, best working hunter at Dumfries this year. Carly Brewster rode the reserve, second in the same intermediate class, Freckleton Maximus.
The mountain and moorland worker champions and reserves were both Welsh mountain geldings, with Longthwaite Red Robin, ridden by Jack Starkie, ahead of Waitwith Windchime and Jennifer Cowan.
Drumacre Lloer Flight, ridden by Charlene Richardson, won a large class of Welsh cobs, before taking the native ridden championship with Alice Tomlinson’s Shetland pony Birchland Admiral reserve. He has had a week at pony club camp and was second at NPS Top Spec dressage and second in the native workers at the NPS Show. Tamevalley Blackjack, by Pendock Legend, won the mini native championship.
He is owned by Lorraine Reid and was third at the RIHS and second at Windsor. As his usual rider was on holiday, Thomas Tuer (6) was ‘borrowed’ to partner him. He is produced by Team Emmerson.
Sarah Harrison’s Baronsdale Regal headed the large classes of ridden coloured horses and ponies and ‘PJ’ Lillington’s colt Woodbury’s Harlequin won the in-hand section, shown by Charlie Cousens.
