In a repeat of last year the overall ridden champion title at the NPS Scotland Golden Jubilee Show at Strathallan Castle was Ian and Alistair Smith’s Fell stallion Carrock I’m Yer Man, ridden by Chris MacMillan.

Carrock I’m Yer Man was purchased from his breeder Glenys Cockbain from Kessock as a yearling seven years ago by Dunblane Fell pony enthusiasts Ian Smith and his son Alistair.

Sally Coutts, judging said: “It was a really lovely pony – a mountain and moorland with lots of action and really going somewhere. It was a straight mover with character – really lovely. I was pleased with all my champions.”

Previously three times champion of the Fell Stallion Show, Carrock I’m Yer Man has concentrated on ridden classes for the past three seasons and the previous week qualified for the Olympia finals after standing champion at Midland Counties. Last year they were reserve supreme of the British Isles NPS finals at Malvern and again stood champion of that section at Strathallan to qualify for the final. Carrock I’m Yer Man was also the sire of the reserve mountain and moorland best bred by exhibitor, the two-year-old free moving filly Bracklinn Steffi.

Overall ridden reserve was Gillian McMurray with her home-bred Highland mare Trailtrow Teaninich, a seven-year-old mare by Ruariah of Mandick and out of Trailtrow Tillywhillie. Ridden by daughter Kirsten to win the intermediate championships last year they were third at the Highland and a Picton finalist.

Heading the Picton championship was Joan McCallum’s five-year-old Connemara gelding Drummore Castle, ridden by Kirstine Douglas. By Castle Gizmo, out of the ridden champion mare Sydserff Cinders, it was reserve at NPS Spring earlier this year.

Reserve was Evelyn Aitken’s four-year-old Welsh section C mare Passford Showgirl which stood champion of the Kilmannan novice ridden championship.

Richard Telford won the Olympia qualifier with Caroline Gray’s Welsh section D gelding Tybanadal Trystan. Bought from Gill Simpson 18 months ago, Trystan was fifth at the Highland and reserve at Blair last year with Richard who meets up with the pony at shows.

“He’s my pony and I ride him at home and take him to the beach,” said Caroline who lives in East Linton where her husband farms pigs and potatoes. Reserve was Alison Grainger’s Connemara Eastlands Loch Tam.

Working hunter ponies had a testing course devised by Graham Barclay with few clears in all sections, especially in the Royal international qualifiers. Winner of the working hunter supreme title was Lauren Jarvis with her palomino Welsh section C gelding Peasdown King Louis. Bought out of north Wales last year the six-year-old gelding was champion the previous week at Campsie. Lauren, part of the Scotland young judges team at the BSPS summer championships last year, has qualified her hunter Knight Templar for the middleweight and amateur class at the Royal International.

King Louis came to the championship after heading the Royal International qualifier, however disappointing for connections as they were not NPS members the qualifying ticket was passed down a class to the reserve which went on to stand eventual reserve supreme having stood open champion. This was Sarah Gemmell with the veteran Connemara gelding Grange Homeward Sparrow which was champion at Stewarton.

“Both had good walks and the champion had the best gallop,” said overall judge Viviene Hampton.

In the overall championship of the in-hand section it was the show pony in-hand champion, Whalton Above Suspicion, that was Stella Hore’s choice for the supreme.

“I liked its outlook, for a stallion it was very well behaved, full of presence and moved nicely with clean limbs – it was a nice riding pony sire,” said Stella from Devon.

Owned by Kim O’Dwyer from Banchory, the seven-year-old riding pony stallion is on lease to the Carhouse Stud in Lancashire. Bred in the purple from a line of riding pony champions, it is by Kilvington Scoundrel and out of Whalton Heavon Above, and has one and two-year-olds out on the show circuit.

Reserve and marking the stud’s third consecutive reserve supreme was the mountain and moorland supreme in-hand, the Waxwing Stud’s Welsh section B yearling colt Waxwing Penny Farthing, whose sibling Waxwing Penny Gold filled a similar position here last year as did the yearling Rhydeilian Masterpiece in 2008. Already overall M&M champion at Fife, the yearling is by the stud’s Eyarth Beau Geste and out of Millcroft Pleasure whose full sister Millcroft Dahlia was champion at the Royal Welsh and the bloodlines go back to Thornwood Royalist which stood at the stud.

Earlier Penny Farthing was champion mountain and moorland in-hand with Kevin and Lesley Moy’s Welsh section A mare Flydon Lavant in reserve. Best of the mountain and moorland ponies (exlcuding Welsh) was Bill Ireland’s Kilmannan Robert the Bruce, with the Lomondside Stud’s Willoway Carousel in reserve.

Show hunter pony in-hand champion was David Robertson’s Ayr show pony champion Braeglen Masterpiece while Jill Cousens home-bred Rustums Komati was part-bred champion. Lightly shown, this two-year-old blue roan gelding was reserve at the Friends of Ponies UK show.
