At the Scottish Welsh Pony and Cob Association Spring Show at the Howe Country Centre, Giffordtown, the overall in-hand supreme champion was the section D overall champion, Brian and Shona Thomson’s beautifully mannered stallion Pennal The Great.
Overall in-hand reserve was Hoekhurst Sweet Symphony, a three-year-old section B filly which Lynneann Cameron had purchased at Fayre Oaks as a yearling. Last year Symphony was overall reserve mountain and moorland pony at Angus, champion at Central and West Fife, overall native in hand champion at Fettercairn and Supreme of Show at Echt.
The overall section A champion was the Murphy Family’s grey stallion Dukeshill Darcy, a son of Dukeshill Magnum and of the late Dukeshill Dulcinea. Last year, shown by his breeders Kathy and Joanna Shiel, Darcy had been champion at Glamorgan and Carmarthen, reserve at Lampeter, reserve male champion at the Royal of England, a winner at Three Counties and Cothi Bridge, second at the Royal Welsh and champion at a special centenary stallion parade at Cheshire County. From the Raithill Stud, Kirkcaldy, came the reserve, their yearling cream colt Waitwith Gold Dust (Tamevalley Sahara/Waitwith Desire), which had been a mountain and moorland winner at the NPS Scotland Spring Show.
Paddock Dianthus (Paddock Riverdance/Kiltinane Diana), leased from Brian Fotheringham by Lynneann Cameron, has not been in a showring since she was a yearling, five years ago. She made a most successful return to the show scene by claiming the overall section B title, with the youngstock champion Hoekhurst Sweet Symphony, reserve.
Alison Moran was showing Claire Willis-Burton’s four-year-old bay mare Pentrefelin Darcy Bussle (by Northleach Gigalo), which is ‘on loan’ to her to start a ridden career, and although she had only had this pony for a very short time, secured the overall section C title – not the first time this mare has medalled for her breeders. The Passford Stud’s two-year-old Passford Rebecca (Parvadean Replay/ Barwoods Victoria) was reserve. She had been champion section C at the Royal Highland last year. Reserve to Pennal The Great amongst the section D contenders was Jackie McKnight’s Trefaldwyn Lady Alis, by Ty’roes Lord JIm, which overall in-hand reserve at this show last year.
The part-bred Welsh champion, as she was last year, was Eleanor Crate’s five-year-old mare Penmaric Beginagain, which, later, partnered by Devon Sloan, was reserve overall ridden supreme champion. She was bred by Susan Hoggans and is a daughter of Passford Sunnay Boy. Sue Williamson’s dark brown gelding Blaenllain DB’s Dark Shadow, the part-bred youngstock champion, was reserve. He was bred at Lampeter and bought at Fayre Oaks last year as a yearling colt, having been champion at Ceredigion WP&C Welsh partbred points. Dark Shadow is by the Welsh part-bred and Arab partbred Blaenllain Doodleba (GBR) by Ali Nepal.
Claiming the Millcroft gelding championship was Lorna Keay’s chestnut Coedeneirth Reward (Tumbarlum Nimrod/Miru Morning Cloud) bred in Malborough nine years ago. KIrsty Miller’s Bryndefaid Paddington, reserve, was bred by Sandy Anderson and Kathleen Scott, and is a five-year-old son of Friars Sprightly and Bryndefaid Pippa. He was second at the NPS Scotland Spring Show.
Eleanor Crate showed the members’ in-hand champion, her two-year-old section B colt Skellorn Grafitti (Glansevin Grafitti/ Skellorn Ebony Rose) which had been champion of the mountain and moorland inhand entry at the SWPCA Winter Show. Jill Cousens’ yearling colt Rustums Tremalo was reserve.
The part-bred ridden champion was Penmaric Beginagain, with Carenza Dickens grey Cedar Farm Top Man, by Burstye Poseidon, which had been the supreme ridden contender at the SWPCA Winter Show, reserve. Novice ridden honours went to Linda Hiddleston’s nine-year-old Logiealmond-bred cob Coldwell Fashion The Second (also reserve overall worker), whilst the four-year-old section C pony Gems Cock of the North, shown by Louise Morrison, was reserve.
Caroline Gray’s seven-year-old chestnut cob gelding Tybanadi Trystan (Llanarth Solo/ Cathedine Daphne), ridden by Richard Telford, was performance champion after giving a freestyle show. A local pony, Felicity Baker’s grey Welsh part-bred Whalton Pipsqueak, by Kilvington Scoundrel, was reserve. Tybanadi Trystan was also members’ ridden champion, with Alice Scotland’s leading rein pony, her grey mare Corn Meadow Flute (Llanerch Sirius/ Synod Flutter) reserve. Flute had been bred at Galashiels 15 years ago.
The Graham family from Carluke had double success in the NPS open classes, where their first ridden pony Walseker Leonardo, by Paddock Tigre, was champion, and their leading rein entry Gartconnel Comet, by Gartconnel Shooting Star, reserve. Junior ridden champion was Lauren Mercer’s cob Kentchurch Galaxy, with Nicole Page’s Morwyn Alys Rose reserve.
The overall worker champion, judged in some of the wettestt weather, was Jenny Adams’ seven year old cob mare Heddfan Candy (Crugybar Valient’s Last/ Heddfan Rambling Rose), winner of the mixed height novice class. The grey Hilin Taliesin son Rumworth Moonlight, partnered by Becca MacMillan, won the open section, ahead of Beth Hill’s cob stallion Llanllugan Mike’s Lad byCascob Braveheart.
Young handlers champion was Jordan Scobie, showing Treflan Chocolate Button which takes part in show hunter pony and part-bred Arab classes
