While the dreich weather at the Haughs might have lessened the number of spectators around the rings on the opening day of Turriff Show, the quantity and quality of light horses forward competition was certainly not marred by the wet conditions.

It remains one of the best supported light horse shows in Scotland.

Leading the supreme competition, which was judged by Fife’s Andrew Bowie, to top the 16 in-hand and ridden champions forward to contest the overall honours, was the show pony champion Milton Pageboy, piloted by eight-year-old Nicole Lockhead Anderson, from Banchory.

Winning the family’s first ever supreme championship, this seven-year-old grey gelding, which was bought last year with a ride at HOYS, has this year qualified for HOYS by winning at the North of England Show at Arena UK, and has also won at Banchory and the BSPS Strathallan shows. He was mini champion at Goval, and whilst stabled at home, he is also produced by Anna Craigie and Jane Miller.

“The pony caught my eye the minute it came into the ring,” said Mr Bowie, adding that it showed itself very well. “It moved well and didn’t put a foot wrong.”

And the pony returned to the show the following day to contest the supreme animal in show in memory of the late Harry Sleigh, of St Johns Wells, against the leaders of the sheep, beef cattle, Clydesdales and dairy, again not putting a foot wrong, it was awarded the reserve supreme plaudits.

Winning the reserve overall light horse honours was a pony which Mr Bowie felt would come out to make a super future pony under saddle. This was Jill Cousens’s Arab and part-bred champion, the in-hand two-year-old gelding Kenilwood El Nino.

Travelling to the show from Cromlix Stables at Dunblane, he is no stranger to success in the show ring, having won championships this year at Stewarton, the NPS, Doune and Dunblane and Braco, as well as standing supreme horse champion at Central and West Fife.

Gardenstown’s Claire Chisman and Tom Marshall also had a day to remember when they lifted both of the in-hand riding pony championships. Winning the overall for those sections was Small-Land Entertainer, a two-year-old which they had bought at Fairoaks last year.

The first class of the day and the last championship of the afternoon was for the working hunters, judged by James Munro. Champion was Craigie Equestrian, of Drakemyre, at Huntly, with the eight-year-old bay mare, Birth Song Buri, which was ridden by Louise Morrison. This daughter of Lucky Dealer was supreme at Aden Park, champion at Mundole and has qualified for two workers classes at Blair.

Hunter and hack champion was the former intermediate eventer, Soundtrack, with owner rider Laurie Cairnie, from Fettercairn. This 12-year-old gelding by Western Hope, was champion ridden at the Brechin Castle summer show, champion at the ILPH at Brechin and lead its hunter class at Fettercairn.

The winning hack to the reserve honours. This was Lisa and Carolyn Coghill’s noted prizewinner Stemster Millenium Bug, which was champion this year at Kingsbarns and reserve at the Puddledub Show.

Maintaining her championship success from the Royal Highland, the mountain and moorland championship was won by Moira Leggat, of Bogs of Melrose, with her five-year-old black Welsh D mare, Durris Lucky Touch. By Kentchurch Cadenza and out of Durris High Spirits, this low mileage mare has also been reserve supreme at Strathbogie, first at the Winter Woolies and at the Aberdeen and District Welsh show.

In the Highland pony ring, the yeld mare class produced both the champion and reserve for the section. Champion was John Reid’s seven-year-old grey mare, Molly of Dounemont, from Rothienorman. Sired by North-Wells Super Scot, this mare which is also broken to ride, was champion at Strathbogie Show this year and last. In 2009 she was champion and reserve supreme at Grantown Show, was reserve champion at New Deer, second at the Royal Highland and ADWPCEG summer champion.

Reserve champion and second in her class was Lynne McDonald’s Morven of Coynach. This four-year-old mare, which was shown by George McDonald, was champion at Fettercairn Show this year.

Repeating her breed success from New Deer Show, where the pony also won the reserve overall championship, winning the tri-colour in Shetland pony ring was Linda Stewart’s five-year-old yeld mare, Wester Cushnie Reach For The Sky, from Tofthills Cottage, Insch.

This daughter of Abbotsbury Urquhart, which was bred by Margaret Smith, and bought as a foal, has also won championships this year at Angus and the Northern Working Horse shows.

Reserve Shetland, on its first show outing for this season, was Winnie Anderson’s two-year-old filly, Strocherie Elation. This home-bred filly was champion last year at Echt and was junior champion at last year’s Banchory.

The first winner of the new veteran section was Susan Kilgour’s 17-year-old show pony Rotherwood Picador. This gelding had topped the veteran ridden class with 13-year-old Jemma Spencer, from Ythanbank, Ellon. Sired by Strinesdale Matador, he was champion riding pony at Fettercairn and veteran champion at New Deer.
