SEVERAL OF the horses and ponies at Doune and Dunblane Show had done rather well at the Royal Highland Show.
Amongst them was Willie Simpson’s Chapelhill Tess (Auchnahillin Scarba/Chapelhill Maggie) a nine-year-old mare which was reserve overall in-hand Highland pony. She continued her success here by claiming the Highland pony championship, with Wendy Scott’s recently acquired gelding Cuilleann of Dunrui, by Moss-side Dorlach, reserve.
The Eynhallow Stud’s three-year-old colt Eynhallow Black Magic, the Shetland pony leader, has had an impressive ring career, being second at the Highland after collecting honours at Tayside, Grampian Foal Show and the Winter Fair.
From Jim and Graeme Wilson’s stud at Muckhart came the reserve, their brood mare Warrackston Guylian, whose foal also won its class. To add to their fine day out, grand-daughter Lisa Wilson was best young handler.
Secret Solitaire (Solitair/It’s A Secret), Sarah Houlden’s home-bred three-year-old filly from Strathearn Sport Horses, captured the hunter breeding title, and plans are for her to be broken and have a worker career. Another home-bred entry, the Reid family’s yearling gelding Lynnbank Van Sar, a winner at the Highland was reserve.
Hunter champion was Lauren Jarvis’s grey gelding Knight Templar, by Ricardo Z, is doubly qualified for the Royal International, and Lauren intends to go there, trying for a HOYS qualifier on the way. Laura McArthur’s six-year-old gelding Westmore Quest, by Broadstone West Country, was reserve, as he had been at Drymen. He was second at Ayr and third at the Highland.
A two-year-old Welsh mountain colt at his very first show claimed the in-hand mountain and moorland championship. He is Lesley and Kevin Moy’s Cromagtir Gawain, by their Ambercott Pageboy.
Reserve both in-hand and ridden was Liz and Pat Rennie’s New Forest mare Willoway Carousel, while ridden honours went to Alison McLeod’s Highland pony Rory of Alltnacailleach, a son of Kincardine Ben Macdhui.
The leading mini native pony was the Sarim Stud’s Foxcroft Miss Monique, by Rotherwood Statesman. She is being a real confidence-booster for her rider, 11-year-old Katelin McCartney. Amy Graham’s Paddock Tigre son Walseker Leonardo, reserve, had been SWPCA champion.
Melissa McCluskey’s Royal Highland ridden Arab champion Lucy Brown (Whalton High Flyer/Silken Knot) captured the intermediate title, with her four-year-old mare Barrdene Paris Lace, by Willowcroft Regal Bronze, being show hunter pony champion at what was only her fifth show.
Mary Nicoll-Thompson’s part-bred Arab geldings Rotherwood Rainbow and Marshbrook Ltd Edition were reserve in each section. Charlie Cousens’ leading rein Kenilwood Purple Emperor, by Moorhall Miniature, won the mini show pony title. In reserve was Lynda Mulholland’s first ridden Morwyn Lady Verity. Three-year-old Kiera Brash, on her first time in a show ring, was second in the leading rein class on her coloured mare Tinker. Mary Nicoll-Thompson’s Jack of Diamonds, by Kilvington Scoundrel, followed up his show pony championship at BSPS Scotland, Strathallan, by heading the show ponies. David Robertson’s five-year-old mare Truly Scrumptious, another by Kilvington Scoundrel, was reserve. At Ayr Show she had qualified for the RIHS.
Storm Trooper, a three-year-old home-bred Warmblood gelding by Cutsdean Centurion, won the coloured in-hand championship for Joyce Hatton, as he had done at the Royal Highland. The Raith-Hill Stud’s four-year-old gelding Hairy McClairy was reserve.
The ridden champion was Gillian Rosen’s Bluetooth, ridden by Kirsty Aird. Bluetooth has qualified for the maxi cob class at the RIHS. Louise Snowie’s skewbald gelding Noble Elton, reserve, had been champion as a worker at Central and West Fife and champion at Drymen.
Gavin Hay rode Farchynys Pererin into top place in both the BSPS Heritage mountain and moorland worker section, with Becca MacMillan’s grey gelding Rumworth Moonlight reserve, and also topped the mini workers ahead of Holly Sherrie on the part Dartmoor mare Milton Chilli Pepper. The BSPS worker champion was Pebbly Grey Fox, ridden by Jessica Tinson. He has qualified for both the RIHS and the Burghley event pony competition. Mhairi Miller’s Pebbly House Martyn, by Rockrimmon Senator, was reserve.
Tracy Marshall’s Bennochie Blue was the leading pony club pony, with her 19-year-old Wingrove Minkino son Muirhall Panache reserve, whilst 10-year-old Bryce Robertson, a member of West Perthshire Pony Club was named the best rider. His mount was Duntarvie Raindance, which had been champion at Drymen in the pony club section. The reserve rider was Lauren Aitchison, with her part New Forest gelding Mydle Prince, which had been champion at the Festival of Champions, SNEC.
The leading ridden Arab, Anglo Arab or part-bred Arab was Jack of Diamonds, with Pamela Willox-Hamilton’s 17-year-old gelding Saiyid El Kheil (Maleik El Kheil/Somrah) reserve. He had been second at the Royal Highland, and last year was overall ridden champion at the Scottish Arabian Show. In-hand honours went to Jill Cousens’ two-year-old black gelding Kenilwood El Nino, by Mynach Arion, which had been supreme in-hand at Central and West Fife.
Kim Pearson-Miller’s Welsh cross stallion JD’s El Dorado was private driving champion, ahead of Norman MacAllister’s Craigwell Holly, which had been a Royal Highland winner in the exercise vehicle class.

After a couple of recent visits to Musselburgh racecourse, I am of the view that it is a worthy contender for a racecourse of the year award.
