At the BSPS Scotland’s Spring Show at Rowallan, it was Millie Manners’ Waxwing Painter, the Heritage novice mini champion, winner of the first ridden class, which was made supreme.

Painter, a six-year-old son of Waxwing Hurricane and Synod Poplin, was bought last year and at the BSPS Heritage Championship Show he won the ‘tiny tots’ first ridden class and was reserve.

At Rowallan, Millie also rode her Horse of the Year show winner, Waxwing Pringle, which won his first pony of show hunter type class and became mini pony champion.

Melissa McCluskey’s Hinwood Two Thyme (Strinesdale Matador/Chiddock Lavender) ridden pony champion and also reserve in the Anglo and part-bred Arab section, was selected by BSPS Scotland chairman, Joyce Coltart, who was called upon as umpire in the reserve supreme judging.

Two Thyme had previously been supreme novice at Rowallan and at the BSPS Championships had claimed the honours as the supreme champion show pony of 2009.

Melissa also won the novice intermediate championship with Lucy Brown (Whalton High Flyer/Silken Knot). This was the first time that Melissa had ridden the mare which was brought to the show by Jerome.

The open and restricted intermediate championships were won by Elizabeth Cross’s New Future Fling, a five-year-old mare by Kilvington Scoundrel. She had been bought from her breeder Pam Pricket and was reserve champion at Aintree International EC. Jill Slight won the RIHS small height class with Stanley Grange City Lights which went on to be reserve hack and reserve in both restricted and open intermediates.

The champion hack was Catherine Altham’s Whistle in the Wind, ridden for the first time by Emma Boardman. Whistle in the Wind had won two races, then had a change of career and went to the Horse of the Year Show SEIB racehorse to riding horse class where she was ninth.

Fiona Stewart found her Arab champion in Lyndsey McCulloch’s Derwent Shadow Play, ridden by Richard Telford.

The champion riding horse was Alexandra Peill’s seven-year-old Helsington Taylor Made, produced by the Knipe family, who bred him. Last year, he was reserve show hunter pony at Ayr, but has since matured into a horse.

The cob title was claimed by Joanne Dewhurst’s coloured Funky Monkey, and is also produced by the Knipe family. He was also reserve coloured horse.

Champion of this BSPA RIHS section was Ryelle Morton’s Jack X, which has twice been coloured winner at Ayr and has been to Hickstead.

Mountain and moorland worker honours went to Rachael Snowie’s Georgian Dorian, by Llandyn Adda.

Philippa Weir’s Parkfield Freddie, winner of the advanced nursery stakes, was the BSPS mini worker champion. The worker champion was Harris Ritchie’s grey Catmint.

The RIHS mini mountain and moorland champion was Christine Myles’ Dartmoor gelding, Greenferns Shem (Senruf Solomon/Greenferns Fair Blossom), bred by Donald, Helen and Lewis Anderson. He won the lead rein class with daughter Tess (4) and the first ridden with Anna, (11), the same age as the pony.

Bill Ireland’s Dales stallion, Kilmannan Black Magic, won his RIHS class and would have been champion, but would not stand still to receive his rosette, so the title went to Shona Thompson’s Welsh cob stallion, Pennal The Great, which had also been champion at the BSPS Scotland Winter Show.

Christine and Charlie Anderson’s section C stallion, Yrallt May Day Surprise, ridden by Louise Maxwell was reserve. This eight-year-old won at Hickstead last year.

The Heritage open and restricted mini championships were won by Maia Fleming’s Thistledown Popcorn with Hannah Grant’s Llanarw Betsan reserve.

The reserve mini pony, winner of the show pony first ridden class, was Lucy Bainbridge Craig’s Hightopps Enchantment.
