It was a day of doubles at the Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire and Eglinton point-to-point at Overton, Clyde Valley on Saturday when both Tristian Davidson and Nathan Moscrop rode doubles and Mike Smith and Victor Thompson both trained two winners apiece.

A large crowd turned out to the course which was basked in glorious sunshine with the going described as good to firm.

Nathan Moscrop got the first winner of the day, winning on Catriona McKeane’s Leading Man, by eight lengths from Victor Thompson’s Seaview Lass, a winner at Corbridge two weeks previously. The 10-year-old bay gelding was sent clear two from home after Seaview Lass ploughed through the third last taking avoiding action from Bal Des Champs who unseated its rider.

Sadly the owner was not on hand as she was ill reported the winning trainer Vicki Dobbin who has three point-to-pointers in training and was also notching up her first training success from her base in Carlisle. Home-bred Leading Man was previously in training with Ferdy Murphy and won the One Man novices chase at Weatherby three years ago.

Nathan’s second win came courtesy of Briscoe Place in the men’s open finishing strongly ahead of Adam Waugh and Dix Villez by five lengths. Send off 2/5 favourite the 10-year-old has won three point-to-points this year for trainer Iain Jardine from Bonchester Bridge.

“He settled away nicely, I told Nathan to just sit there and let him pop away,” said Iain. Next on the cards is either a hunter chase at Musselburgh or the Vale of Lune men’s open at Whittington on Easter Saturday for the stable star.

Tristian Davidson extended his lead in the Northern Area men’s championship with two wins, two seconds and a third at the meeting. His first win came courtesy of Victor Thompson’s Indian Print in the confined. Always travelling well it won by 12 lengths from Pendle Forest.

“Seaview Lass was unlucky in the first race,” said Victor a sheep farmer from Newton-by-the-Sea. “She ran well but hit the fence hard and Tristian lost both stirrups, she would have won.”

A winner of its last three outings at Alnwick and Friars Haugh plans are uncertain for the six-year-old. “I’d like to run 12 horses over Easter weekend at Percy and Morpeth and I’d especially like to win the Percy members – I’m sick of being second!” joked Victor.

Seeven went to post in the ladies open race which featured a clash between the in-form Robin de Sherwood and dual Overton course winner, the diminutive Sea Scout, however they hadn’t bet on Joey Richards and Itzacliche who finished full of running 12 lengths clear of Robin de Sherwood and Catherine Walton.

Joey’s father the National Hunt trainer Nicky Richards missed her win as he had five horsses running at Newcastle that day.

“He wants it like a road,” said Joey.

“It’s his first time with blinkers, I couldn’t believe how he ran – he just bolted up today,” she added.

The 10-year-old is likely to head for Whittington or Netherby next if the ground is right.

The Norrie Drummond Castle Bookmakers confined saw Mike Smith’s Galston yard in form with a win and third place.

Mike riding Athoss moved up to second four from home behind favourite Barry the Cracker and landing in front at the last finished strongly five lengths ahead of Barry the Cracker and stable mate Frontier Lad, partnered by leading novice rider Grant Cockburn, three lengths adrift in third.

“He’s a good horse and always runs a good race, he’ll move up a grade and aim for a hunter chase or go to Tranwell,” said Mike of the eight-year-old.

The good fortune of the West Loudon yard continued in the next race when Mikey Ennis got a late call up to ride Scotch Warrior. Maften and Tristian Davidson led most of the way only to be over taken on the final straight.

“He made ground up in the second circuit and as I turned into the straight I could see Tristain was off the bridle,” said Mikey. “He’ll improve again,” he added.

Commenting on his decision to pass the ride over Mike Smith said: “I’d always planned to ride three horses here. Frontier Lad fell at the first fence at Dalston two weeks ago and I hurt my neck – I’ve been at physio four times this week.”

Scotch Warrior was purchased at the Doncaster sales two years ago and was fifth in a bumper at Perth.

Tristian’s second win came in the concluding Albert Bartlett six-year-old and over open maiden race when Moor Red held off a late challenge from Mike Smith and Hawthorne Bay.

The nine-year-old has been off for 22 months and missed last season after a bad fall at the final fence at the Fife point-to-point in 2008 and was second at Alnwick two weeks earlier.

Two pony races opened the day, George Innes Ker and Clonross Star won the under 13.2hh class and Henry Morshead took the 14.2hh equivalent with Over to Kerry.
