The Agnew family played host to the Scottish BE100 and BE90 Championships at Hendersyde horse trials.

In the championship classes, the show jumping is done in reverse order after the cross country phase. This proved no hindrance for the either of the winners.

The show jumping track was built on a slope and really tested out balance and control with many riders falling foul of the questions asked. The cross country was an inviting track with the championship class having a few different fences to the non-championship classes.

In the BE100 championship section, Fiona Malcolm rode her own Glenvilla Mai to victory. Alan Gilbert was unlucky to roll a pole on the inform Wesley OA which dropped him from second to fifth in the hotly contested section. Fiona bought the six-year-old from dealer Stephen Gittens last year.

Fiona reflected: “She was brilliant! I have been really looking forward to it as in the past few weeks everything seems to have clicked with her. We have had a few issues with braking and turning as she hunted before I got her so just went everywhere fast to begin with! She is a great horse and she just did it all perfectly. I’ve never show jumped her after the cross country but she really sat back and listened.”

Runner up was Sarah Smith and the seven-year-old Mr Twist-sired The Statesman.

In the BE90 championship, the inform combination of Alex O’Mara and Mr Incredible II experienced their third win in four outings. The combination had just returned from a three-day BYRDs camp at Rowallan which obviously paid off with their dressage mark of 25.

Alex said: “I bought Mr Incredible as a five-year-old three years ago. I’ve been slowly working away with him and we did a couple of BE 90s last season. He has only just come out eventing this year as I was studying for my exams in the earlier half of the season. He did a lovely dressage test and he really powered round the cross country.”

Runner up was Esther Knox and the Tornado-sired Binks.

Sarra Mayberry rode Rhona Elliot’s cheeky Accondy-sired Hownam Law to win the open novice section. This follows on nicely from their open intermediate win at Eglinton.

Sarra remarked: “He has decided to be good again! I took him to Hendersyde to practise some corners on the cross country. He went very well but to win was a bonus after all his blips over the past year. His owner and breeder, Rhona Elliot, was there to watch him as her husband is one of the cross country starters so we were all very pleased with him. The course rode well although the time was exceptionally generous.”

Mathew Wright rode the stallion Ballintoger Royale to take second spot.

The intermediate novice was won by The Kings Imp and Sophie Martin who finished on their 29.6 dressage mark. This combination won the CIC * at Great Witchingham in the spring.

Sara Dudgeon was runner up with the consistent Turbo Toy.
